About

In 2018, American-Dutch producer, composer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist G.T. Thomas began surprising audiences with solo performances of her original compositions for her synthesizer system.

Taking a step back, it’s easy to see a minimalist tendency has always been just beneath the surface of many of the songs she has been writing/ performing (primarily as a singing bassist) over the last decade, as well as in her compositions for art installations that have been heard around the world.

In her synth pieces, her interest in minimalism finally takes center stage. G.T. Thomas uses sequencers to explore the phase-like impact of phrases of overlapping, varying lengths as they go through changes of timbre and tempo (what she calls "phrase phasing"). The result is a musical journey between pre-composed peaks and valleys, with spontaneous, organically improvised detours all along the way.

Performances

G.T. Thomas currently performs with a system consisting of her Moog Mother-32s, TC-Helicon VoiceLive Play pedals, Korg Kaoss pad, a microphone, and (optional) music box.

She has played in The Netherlands and the United States. At two performances, she accompanied herself on electric bass, and at one she was joined by the rest of her G.T. Thomas Trio.

The pieces she has performed thus far were both roughly around 20 minutes long, and are entitled "Filling In" and "Revelation."

Thomas has yet to be convinced that synth performances are enjoyable in any manner other than "in the moment, live, as-it-happens," and is reluctant to share live videos or audio online of entire performances. Please check the calendar for when to catch her live.

Doodler of Noodlers

“The synthesizer community in The Netherlands is a group of really warm, non-competitive, supportive musicians, inventors, and creative thinkers.

I recently got the urge to make little drawings of synthesizer performers... in other words, to be a ‘doodler of noodlers.’ If you see me staring at you with a pen and paper at a synth event, I might be making one of these of you."
